Plenty of Tottenham Hotspur supporters are beginning to lose faith in their club after they failed to secure the signature of a single player during the summer transfer window, but that has not prevented a handful of fans from getting excited by a recent report from Spain.
Indeed, Spurs were linked with a whole host of talented players – most of them promising rather than proven – throughout the summer but the speculation eventually turned to nothing. With the likes of Toby Alderweireld, Danny Rose and Mousa Dembele all supposedly angling for transfers away from the club, plenty of potential replacements were suggested throughout the media.
Dembele in particular seemed to be nailed on for a summer switch but yet he remains in north London. However, the Belgium international’s decision to remain at the club has not completely quashed speculation regarding a replacement.
According to a recent report from Spanish media outlet Mundo Deportivo (via City Watch), Tottenham are interested in signing Ajax academy graduate Frenkie De Jong in the future, although they will face competition from PSG, Barcelona, Manchester City, Roma and Borussia Dortmund.
The technically gifted 21-year-old is a central midfielder by trade who has established a glowing reputation in the Eredivisie for his incredible vision and desire to play the ball forward into promising attacking situations at every opportunity.
His exceptional eye for a pass, neat close control and natural ability to find space all over the park suggest he is destined to thrive in European football, so it’s no wonder the Tottenham fans are so delighted by their club’s reported interest.
Here’s what the Spurs fans have had to say about their links with De Jong…
Our interest in Frenkie de Jong in Sept. causes mixed emotions. It's frustrating because we needed to sign a proper Dembele replacement this summer. With half of Europe after Frenkie it seems unlikely we'll sign him in January, though it would be a coup if we did. #COYS #THFC
