Liverpool supporters in the Transfer Tavern are eagerly anticipating their side’s trip to Premier League strugglers Southampton on Sunday, with the Reds looking to get back to winning ways after drawing with Tottenham last time out.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their clash with the North London outfit off the back of comprehensively beating Huddersfield Town, but were unable to seal back-to-back victories in a thrilling game at Anfield last weekend. Mohamed Salah’s brace looked set to give the Reds all three points, only for Harry Kane to make amends for an earlier penalty miss to slot home a 95th minute spot-kick to clinch a deserved point for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
Thus, there have been some frustrated Liverpudlians in the Tavern this week, several of whom quickly turned their attentions towards this Sunday’s clash with Mauricio Pellegrino’s Southampton, a clash which will see several ex-Saints stars make the return to St Mary’s with the Merseyside giants.
As such, a number of those Reds fans lining up at the bar have been discussing who could be the next Southampton player to swap the South Coast for the North West, with many feeling that in-form James Ward-Prowse could be that man.
The 23-year-old hasn’t always been a regular starter under Pellegrino this term but has been in fine form since the turn of the year, netting four goals in six appearances in all competitions, helping them to wins over Fulham and West Brom, and a 2-2 draw away at Watford.
And this recent run of form appears to be just a small part of what the England international could go on to achieve in his career, with it clear that he has all the ingredients to go on and become a top-quality midfielder.
Ward-Prowse already has 158 Premier League appearances under his belt to suggest that he is no longer a novice at this level, while recent weeks have seen him play more on the right-hand-side of Pellegrino’s midfield, from which the Saints have certainly reaped the rewards.
The Englishman, who earned a senior cap for his country against Germany in March last year, is excellent with the ball at his feet and has great vision and awareness of those in front of him, allowing him to create space and dissect through balls between opposition defenders. Add in his set piece ability, and he always carries a threat in the final third.
And with things clearly working down that right-hand-side, it appears that Ward-Prowse may finally get a solid run of games in the team in a bid to start fulfilling his undoubted potential, potential that earned him a senior England cap at the age of just 22.
Clearly, Ward-Prowse appears to be the next talent coming off the production line at Southampton, which means that Liverpool may well be interested in the time to come, perhaps even sooner should the Saints go down to the Championship this season.
And given how well the likes of Adam Lallana and Sadio Mane have taken to life at Anfield following stints at Southampton, the £13.5 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) could well be the next to swap the South Coast for Merseyside.
