This 20-year-old midfielder might be the perfect partner for Kante at Chelsea next season – here’s why

The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are intrigued at reports linking the Blues with a move for Ruben Neves…

Though not a household name in England, Neves has been steadily impressing our resident European fans with his fine performances in his native Portugal. A regular for Porto as a teenager, Neves has been performing far beyond his years as of late.

A deep-lying midfielder, Neves is strong in the tackle and a relentless runner, whilst he also is very efficient at finding a pass and spreading out play. In many ways, he is the complete midfielder, though – given his age – he does, of course, have some improving to do. That being said, there would be no better place to ply his trade than at Stamford Bridge. Surrounded by players with technical class like Cesc Fabregas and defensive efficiency like N’Golo Kante, Neves would be in his element at Chelsea.

Indeed, a partnership between the Portuguese and Kante might be just what Chelsea need next season. His advantage on Nemanja Matic is his agility. Matic is, at times, slightly lacklustre in that department, whilst his passing was also particularly poor at points last season. That is not to say that Neves would necessarily be an upgrade on the Serbian, but with time, he certainly has the potential to be.

If Chelsea can land a good deal for Neves, he would certainly be able to come in and do a job. Add to that the reported interest in Matic from Man Utd, and Conte could well have a midfield rejig this summer.
