The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern are always looking ahead at who their club could look to sign in the coming months…
One player that has recently been linked with the club is £22.5m-rated Andre Gomes, who Transfer Market Web have suggested could be a key target for the Lilywhites. Initial contact is said to be expected soon, meaning that a deal could indeed come to fruition.
It’s a potential deal that has seemingly come out of nowhere, and whilst fans are pointing towards his poor run of form as a reason why he shouldn’t be signed, our landlord doesn’t think that he can be ruled out so quickly.
Sure, he’s struggled at Barcelona, but that doesn’t tell the whole story. A lack of opportunity has certainly had an impact, whilst the pressure that was surely upon his shoulders would have definitely affected him. He has made 0 league starts this season, and so he can’t be expected to force his way into one of Europe’s best midfields without a fair chance.
At Tottenham, though, he would definitely get that chance. Mauricio Pochettino’s options in the middle of the park are relatively limited, with Eric Dier, Victor Wanyama and Mousa Dembele the only players with significant top-flight experience. The latter of that trio, Dembele, has struggled with injury lately, and there is certainly scope to replace him. Gomes could be a good option in that regard. Obviously, Pochettino isn’t going to want to replace Dembele anytime soon, but by the end of the season, that could all change. Thus, a move at the end of the campaign makes sense, giving the club more than enough time to assess the future of Dembele.
As far as his qualities go, he’s a technical master with the ball at his feet. A solid passer of the ball, he excels when moving forward and attacking – much in the same vein as Dembele. Certain aspects of his game are incomplete, notably his finishing, but Mauricio Pochettino could be the man to bring the best out of him.
His stock has never been lower, and so if he’s available, a move to sign him does make a lot of sense. It could be a risk, but it’s one worth taking.Like what the TT have on offer? Sign up for more notifications!
