The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are very concerned at the lack of options that Antonio Conte has in his attack.
Alvaro Morata’s recent injury has really put things into perspective for the Blues, and it leaves them in very bad shape. After eight Premier League games, two things have become clear. Alvaro Morata is one of the Blues’ shrewdest signings in recent memory, and Michy Batshuayi is – simply put – not good enough.
The Belgian had his chance once again over the weekend against Crystal Palace, and he looked very poor indeed. Whilst Morata has a real presence in the area, excellent hold-up play and a goalscoring threat, Batshuaiy displayed none of this. He lost the ball regularly, he failed to link up the midfield and attack, and perhaps most importantly, he failed to make an impact in front of goal. Indeed, it was Tiemoue Bakayoko that had to step up and save Chelsea’s blushes – albeit temporarily – and that says a lot about Batshuayi’s performance.
You can point to his lack of game time, and you can point to his fairly decent goalscoring record, but you have to put these things in context. Chelsea need more than an occasional goalscorer, and Batsuayi simply doesn’t provide anything else. You also have to look at his actual goalscoring record. It’s very good, granted, but you need to consider who he has scored against. He has really struggled whenever he has played against a top side, and a few lucky goals isn’t going to change that perspective.
Batshuayi does have potential, and it’s clear that he is a very good character, but on the pitch, he is simply not good enough right now.
