The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern were buoyed by their side’s result against Crystal Palace last weekend, but their new-found sense of optimism was quickly replaced by concern following reports linking N’Golo Kante with a move away from the club.
N’Golo Kante has established himself as one of Europe’s most highly-regarded midfielders in recent years thanks to his mightily impressive form in English football since moving to Leicester in August 2015. The French international shot to fame after he played an instrumental role in enabling The Foxes to pull off an unthinkable title victory in the 2015/16 season, and the continuation of his success at Chelsea has cemented his reputation in Europe’s elite group of midfield players.
Although he has experienced a noticeable dip in form this season, interest for his signature from outside the club remains a concern for The Blues, as Paris Saint-Germain have made him one of their top targets for the summer transfer window according to Canal+. Considering the quality of Kante’s performances during his stint in English football, PSG’s interest is far from surprising.
Chelsea will be absolutely desperate to convince Kante to remain in West London beyond the end of the season to help the club challenge for the title once again during the next campaign, but in the event that the French giants flex their financial muscles and make an offer that’s too good to refuse, Conte should consider signing Napoli’s defensive midfielder Jorginho (valued at £25.2 million by Transfermarkt) to replace him.
The Brazilian-born Italian international has been a key figure in Napoli’s bid to clinch their first ever Serie A title throughout the season so far, as he has consistently provided a solid shield in-front of his side’s defensive line whilst maintaining a shrewd eye for an incisive forward pass. In that sense, Jorginho is very similar to Kante as he has a fantastic ability to influence the game in the final-third without compromising his defensive duties.
Jorginho’s record of 4 goals and 4 assists from 31 appearances this season proves that he is not merely an anchor who offers nothing more than an interception and a sideways pass. The plethora of qualities he has at his disposal go much deeper than that, so Chelsea should monitor his progress for the remainder of the season in case the lure of the French giants proves too tempting for Kante to ignore in the summer.
