This 26-year-old would make Chelsea’s unstoppable defence even better – here’s why

According to the Mirror, Kyle Walker could be headed to Chelsea this summer – and whilst a few of the fans in the Transfer Tavern are unconvinced by the move, our landlord thinks that it could be perfect for both club and player…

For starters, you have to consider it from Walker’s perspective. He isn’t playing regularly at Tottenham anymore, and a move to Chelsea would undoubtedly be a step up. A step up both economically and with regards to the quality of his teammates. The Blues just won the Premier League, and it would likely be a tough deal for Walker to turn down.

Walker wouldn’t be the only man to benefit, either, because Antonio Conte would too.

For starters, a defensive rejig is essential at Chelsea this summer. The Blues have done well at the back, but with the impending departure of John Terry, and the return of the Champions League, a few new signings are essential. At present, Victor Moses is Conte’s only real option on the right-hand side of the Chelsea defence. Walker could certainly come in and fill that hole, and provide competition for Moses next year.

The defender is also pretty well matched with Chelsea’s system. Naturally more of an offensive defender, he would be perfectly suited to Chelsea’s 3-4-3 formation – allowing him to fly down the wings as only he can. Victor Moses has proven that defensive skill isn’t a particularly important trait in the role, and so Walker would flourish.

Are Tottenham likely to sell to Chelsea? Unlikely, but Conte should try, because Walker would be a top signing.
