This £31.5m-rated African midfielder could be Guardiola’s dream Fernandinho replacement

The Manchester City fans in the Transfer Tavern have been delighted with the entirety of their squad so far this season, but plenty of the supporters have been eager to pay tribute to Fernandinho – a player who often gets overlooked in the mainstream media.

City’s Brazilian midfielder has almost completely epitomised the unsung hero role since joining The Citizens from Shakhtar Donetsk back in 2013. After 5 successful seasons at the club, it’s fair to say that the 33-year-old is moving towards the final stages of his lengthy stint in Manchester, although he’s showing little sign of regression just yet.

However, Guardiola is a forward-thinking manager who will not be resting on his laurels after City’s impressive campaign, so the arrival of a new centre-midfielder to replace Fernandinho in the long-term will certainly be at the top of his agenda in the summer. With that being said, the Spaniard is likely to be requesting scout reports on a handful of top players across Europe, and one man who he should be keeping a very close eye on is Jean Michael Seri (valued at £31.5 million by Transfermarkt).

Nice’s 26-year-old talent has attracted plenty of interest from Europe’s heavyweight clubs so far this season following a string of impressive performances in Ligue 1. The Ivorian international’s playing style is quite different to Fernandinho’s, but that should not be considered a point of concern for Guardiola.

Both Fernandinho and Seri are deep-lying midfielders, but Fernandinho possesses more of a tendency to break free from the anchor role and move forward in possession, whereas Seri prefers to pivot between defence and midfield and dictate proceedings from there. However, Guardiola is one of, if not the greatest man-manager in world football, so the challenge of moulding Seri into a box-to-box midfielder is one he would certainly thrive off.

Seri’s ability to remain composed in possession and pick out his teammates with a variety of different passes is arguably his greatest strength – a quality which Guardiola values very highly in every single one of his players.

Considering the quality Seri has demonstrated during his near-three-year spell with the French outfit, City will certainly face competition for his signature this summer, but they must use their financial muscle to fend off competition from their rivals to secure a perfect replacement for Fernandinho.
