Liverpool’s team is full of quality, and the likes of Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino have got the Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern out of their seats on a near weekly basis as of late.
However, for all of their offensive qualities, their defensive line isn’t looking quite as sharp. Virgil van Dijk has steadied the ship since his arrival, but it’s clear that Jurgen Klopp could still do with a bit more strength at the back.
Indeed, it makes sense to build the back-line around van Dijk, and so bringing in a new player to partner him makes perfect sense. There are a lot of options that Klopp could turn to, but our landlord thinks that Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld is the perfect option.
Rated at £31.5 million by Transfer Markt, Alderweireld has emerged as one of the Premier League’s best players over the last few years. After a loan spell at Southampton, a move to Spurs proved to be the making of him, having formed an excellent partnership with Jan Vertonghen in the heart of the defence.
Providing fantastic aerial dominance, great quality with the ball at his feet, and most important of all, consistent and impressive defending, Alderweireld has been a crucial cog in a Tottenham side that has gone from strength to strength in the Premier League.
Indeed, you could make a case to suggest that the Belgian is arguably the second best central defender in England – right behind Liverpool’s own Virgil van Dijk. Linking them together, then, makes perfect sense – allowing Klopp the perfect combination of quality at the back.
Significantly, Alderweireld is potentially facing the exit door at Tottenham, with the Telegraph reporting that Spurs could be willing to sell him, provided that a team meets their asking price. That’s likely to be above his market value, but still, it would represent great business for Liverpool.
