The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are growing increasingly tired of the regularity of their side’s defensive errors. Mistakes at the back have cost Antonio Conte’s men on more than one occasion over the last few weeks, with a couple of errors against Barcelona in the Champions League arguably being the reason why they lost out against the Spanish giants.
Clearly, then, something needs to change at the back – and our landlord thinks that Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld could be the man to make things right. Tottenham are reportedly ready to sell him, according to the Telegraph, provided that their demands are met, and so the timing couldn’t be better for the Blues.
Undoubtedly one of the most consistent defenders in the Premier League, Alderweireld – who is rated at £36 million by Transfer Markt – has been a thorn in Chelsea’s side over the last few years, often putting in stellar performances at the back for Spurs.
A Belgian powerhouse, his partnership with compatriot Jan Vertonghen has been a highlight of Mauricio Pochettino’s tenure in London, with his excellent defensive skill combining well with Vertonghen’s ability.
Significantly, he’s a proven Premier League player, and so a move for him would come with very little risk. They would know exactly what they’re getting in him, and so Antonio Conte wouldn’t have any concerns about the way that he would adjust to life in South West London.
Chelsea do have solid defenders, with both Cesar Azpilicueta and Andreas Christensen likely to form the core of the defensive line going forward. However, that third central spot is still uncertain, with neither Antonio Rudiger or Gary Cahill doing much to earn the praise of our resident Blues this term.
That spot is made for a player like Alderweireld, and he’d no doubt be at home in Chelsea blue.
