The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are expecting some big names to move to Stamford Bridge this summer, and they don’t come much bigger than Marco Verratti…
The PSG midfielder has emerged as one of Europe’s most talented midfielders over the last few years, and with talk in the Transfer Tavern that Chelsea should look to improve their midfield this summer – he might just be the perfect option.
Firstly, you have to consider Chelsea’s needs in the middle of the park. N’Golo Kante will play when available, that much is a given, but the player that will partner him is far less certain. Nemanja Matic has been solid this year, if not spectacular, but doesn’t bring the sort of quality that Chelsea’s midfield demands. Similarly, Cesc Fabregas brings technical magic, but he lacks the defensive edge needed in a two man midfield. Perhaps this is where Verratti could come in. His passing is every bit as good as Fabregas’, whilst he has that extra defensive edge that the Spaniard lacks. Certainly, he isn’t as defensive as Kante, and he is liable to a mistake, but his fantastic ability to read the game often makes up for that. A constant runner, he would fit in perfectly.
Contextually, a deal for Verratti also makes sense. The Italian really impressed for Italy during Antonio Conte’s stint as manager of the national team, and that connection could prove crucial should Conte to look to get the deal done. Verratti, who is valued at £38.25m by TransferMarkt, wouldn’t need that adjustment period of other midfielders, and Conte clearly trusts him to do a job in the middle of the park.
Is he the perfect player? Of course not. He has discipline issues, and he isn’t as defensive as Nemanja Matic, but the qualities that he brings going forward and his proficiency with the ball at his feet more than make up for his shortcomings. At just 24-years-old, Verratti is destined to become one of Europe’s best, and Chelsea should pounce this summer.
