This 6ft 3in star could single-handedly resurrect Southampton’s season against Chelsea tomorrow

The Southampton supporters have been feeling miserable in the Transfer Tavern of late due to their side’s awful run of form in the Premier League which has put their top-flight status in severe jeopardy with just 6 fixtures left to play.

Mark Hughes enjoyed an excellent debut with the Saints as they moved into the semi-final of the FA Cup with a 2-0 victory over Wigan Athletic last month, but back-to-back defeats in the Premier League against West Ham and Arsenal have put his side in serious danger of relegation.

Things don’t get any easier for Southampton this weekend as they prepare to face the current Premier League champions Chelsea at the St Mary’s Stadium tomorrow afternoon. The fixture will be Hughes’ first home game in charge of the club so he will be desperate to make a positive impression in-front of the supporters.

The Welsh manager will need all eleven of his players to be at their brilliant best to get the better of Antonio Conte’s side this weekend, but the performance of Alex McCarthy between the sticks could prove to be the most important for the club.

Like Southampton, Chelsea are stuck in a rut of their own with only 2 wins to show from their last 8 outings in the league, but that record does not suggest the Saints will be in for an easy ride.

There’s no doubt about it, Chelsea possess quality in abundance across the pitch, especially in the final-third where they have the likes of Eden Hazard, Willian, Alvaro Morata and Cesc Fabregas to call upon.

If Southampton are to emerge with anything to show for their efforts, they will need to stop the aforementioned players from finding space and time in dangerous positions, otherwise they will certainly be destined to suffer yet another defeat this season.

However, in football it’s only natural for a side to concede chances even when they are dominating a match and defending resolutely, so McCarthy will undoubtedly need to make a handful of top saves to give Southampton any chance of claiming an unlikely victory tomorrow.
