The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are getting increasingly more worried about the lack of depth in their side, but this player could kill two birds with one stone.
Reports from the Sun have revealed that Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is demanding the backing of the club’s board to help him sign Barcelona midfielder, Sergi Roberto.
The Blues are looking very bare in the centre of the park following the sale of Nemanja Matic to Manchester United so the versatile Spaniard, who can also play right back, could be the perfect fix.
The Barcelona academy graduate has a £35 million release clause in his contract which Chelsea could easily meet so it is likely to come down to contract negotiations.
Due to Barcelona’s strength in midfield, Roberto is primarily used as a right back which could lead him to join Conte’s side to play in his preferred defensive midfield position.
The 25-year-old has multiple Champions League medals to go with plenty of Spanish league and cup wins along with a Club World Cup.
Aside from the fact that he is a proven winner, the fact that he could fill the hole that Matic left and potentially play as a wing back when needed makes him arguably the best signing Conte could make right now.
It’s no secret that Chelsea need to make more signings this summer to bolster their squad for Europe and Roberto would be a great fit in the Champions’ squad.
