The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern want to see Lewis Baker make a name for himself next year…
Having spent two years on loan in the Netherlands, it is clear that Baker is ready to make the step up to the Premier League, and our landlord thinks he knows the perfect destination – Everton.
Ronald Koeman is a manager that has placed a lot of emphasis on the development of young players. At Southampton, he facilitated the rise of several youngsters, a trend that he is continuing at Goodison Park. With a high-pressing, quick passing and a mobile playstyle, youth is very important – whilst building for the future is also crucial. In that sense, Koeman could get exactly what Chelsea need out of a loan.
You also have to consider the context. Ross Barkley, a player fairly similar to Baker in his play style, looks likely to leave the club this summer having yet to sign a new deal – leaving a gap behind the strikers at Goodison Park. Conveniently, this is Baker’s preferred position, and what a job he would do there. Fantastic from set pieces, incredibly two-footed and with incredible technical ability – Koeman wouldn’t even realise that Barkley was gone.
Indeed, a one-year loan deal could work out for all parties. Everton get a top young player, whilst also improving their squad in place of Ross Barkley. Chelsea, meanwhile, will get to see what Baker can do in the Premier League, whilst the player will be given a chance to shine.
This deal just makes sense.
