The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern were watching on in horror on Saturday night as the Blues struggled to contain the Liverpool attack. Though Antonio Conte packed out the midfield, Chelsea’s midfield trio of Tiemoue Bakayoko, Danny Drinkwater and N’Golo Kante were left panting as the Reds ran rings around them.
To be fair to them, the latter duo of Drinkwater and Kante did look good in parts, but one player that had no redeeming qualities on Saturday was Tiemoue Bakayoko. The Frenchman looked lazy and disappointing on the ball. In truth, he looked an entirely different player to the one that played through the pain barrier to a storming performance against Tottenham earlier this season.
That’s a concern for Antonio Conte, then, given how crucial he has been so far this season. Fortunately, the return of Danny Drinkwater does give the boss a few options, but our landlord thinks that he has one choice ahead of Chelsea’s trip to Swansea City – he must drop Bakayoko.
He’s no longer in a position where he has no choice but to start the summer signing. N’Golo Kante is back from injury, Cesc Fabregas is bang in form, and Danny Drinkwater has made a decent start to life at the club. There are more than enough options for the Italian boss, and Bakayoko simply should not even be under consideration. Drinkwater offers more offensive flair and defensive creation, whilst Fabregas’ attacking qualities are well known to everyone.
A night on the bench beckons for Bakayoko – agreed?
