Chelsea’s squad is full of talent, and not everyone will survive into Maurizio Sarri’s first full season at Stamford Bridge. Especially on the back of the Blues’ poor campaign last term, a few players will be under the microscope as the club look to make some big decisions on who will still be at the club next term.
Some of that will be down the importance of the loan system, whilst some simply won’t feature into Saari’s plans.
The case of David Luiz is a particularly interesting one. His campaign last season was a bit of a write-off, and it’s fair to say that if he doesn’t make an immediate impact this summer, it might be time for the Blues to say goodbye to the divisive defender.
After, last season didn’t go well for the Brazilian. There was a bit of mystery surrounding his circumstances, but it’s fair to say that at the start of the campaign, he wasn’t good enough. He seemed to have reverted back to his old self, which was characterised by mistakes and lapses in concentration. His worst performance came against Roma in Europe, and he was never really seen again.
It wouldn’t have been a surprise to see him leave this summer, then, but he’s been given a chance to impress again, and he needs to take it – especially given his competition next season.
It seems likely that Maurizio Sarri will opt for a four-man defence next term as opposed to the three central defenders that Antonio Conte utilised. Therefore, with the likes of Andreas Christensen, Gary Cahill, Antonio Rudiger, Luiz and even Cesar Azpilicueta all vying for two spots – something has to give. For Luiz, then, a poor summer could keep him at the bottom of the totem pole.
It seems likely that one of Gary Cahill or David Luiz could be facing the exit door this summer. Fortunately for Luiz, he has a head start in that he’ll be involved from the start during pre-season. However, if he performs poorly, then he could fall even further behind Cahill in the pecking order.
