Everton have been a surprising team to watch this season. Improvement was expected under Marco Silva, but it’s been surprising to see just how many significant things have changed at the club.
Most evidently is the style of play. Marco Silva’s methods are clearly working very well, as the Toffees are now impressing with a much more technical and exciting style.
There too have been more than a few impressive individual player performances. Whilst the likes of Gylfi Sigurdsson and Richarlison have expectedly done well, others that were perhaps slightly more unknown quantities have arguably been just as good.
It’s hard to look past Lucas Digne as being a prime example of just that.
The former Barcelona man made a somewhat surprising move to Everton over the summer, and he was tasked with challenging Leighton Baines for the spot in the team that he’s held for the best part of a decade. Many have tried and failed to do that over the years, but Digne has made it happen with ease.
He’s been a regular so far this term, having made 8 league starts, and he’s made an immediate impact.
Offering bags of energy, pace and quality, the French defender has been exactly what Marco Silva needed at the back. He’s brought a fantastic balance of attack and defence, and he’s been exactly what Everton fans likely weren’t expecting.
After all, they probably thought he was a great player, but he’s been one of the best defenders in the Premier League this year, and he’s proven to be crucial to Everton’s success. Everton have bagged a real player in Digne.
