The Man Utd fans in the Transfer Tavern were expecting a win on Tuesday night, but they weren’t expecting Jesse Lingard to be their hero. The Englishman has been a fringe player at Old Trafford this season, but he came in against the Swans and was simply sensational. He bagged two goals, with his second being particularly impressive, and he has certainly put down a marker for his rivals in midfield.
Lingard has rarely been a regular starter at Old Trafford, and with so much talent ahead of him, he isn’t expected to start in many big games. However, after such an incredible performance, our landlord has called for Jose Mourinho to start him this weekend, and it’s pretty tough to disagree with that sentiment.
He was far and away the best player on the pitch against Swansea, and his goal threat on the night was evident. When you consider the poor recent form of the likes of Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who has played frequently this season, there is certainly scope for Lingard to come in. When you add in his other qualities, notably his high work-rate, which could be crucial against Tottenham’s lethal attack, then he certainly shouldn’t be ignored.
Mourinho has his favourites, and so he’s unlikely to make such a major change, but if the manager values his club being a meritocracy, surely there is no debate here?
