The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern had been expecting this season to be Adam Lallana’s best yet at Anfield. The Englishman had a slow start to life at Liverpool, but last season he finally began to find some form, and so he looked to be getting better and better.
However, it has been a tough season so far for the Englishman. Now, with just a few months left until the end of the season, the clock could be ticking on Lallana’s long-term prospects at Anfield.
At 29-years-old, Lallana is no longer a young player. In fact, quite the opposite. He’ll be 30 by the time next season rolls around, and with that will come a whole host of other challenges that he hasn’t experienced yet. He needs to be playing at his best every single week to stand any chance of impressing, and he just hasn’t done that yet. His injury problems are only going to worsen with age, too, and so things aren’t looking too good.
In theory, the next few months could well have been the period in which he really took it to the next level. He’s built a solid foundation over the last few years, and the sale of Philippe Coutinho really opened up a gap for him in the heart of the Liverpool midfield. However, continued injury problems have made progress very slow, and that hasn’t helped things.
What’s more, Liverpool have been doing pretty well without him, and so even at his best, he’s far from certain to start each week. And then you’ve got the recent incident that he had whilst playing for Liverpool’s under-23 side. Sent off for a bad reaction to a challenge, the Englishman has been hit with a lot of criticism – and quite rightly so.
Of course, he’s still at an age where he can turn it around, and Klopp will no doubt still have faith in him. However, if he doesn’t really pick it up over the next few months, you wouldn’t be able to blame Liverpool for looking elsewhere for a possible replacement.
