This Man City target would complete Guardiola’s dream team if signed – agreed?

According to reports emanating from Goal, Man City are keen on a move for Atletic Bilbao defender Aymeric Laporte – and it’s fair to say that our resident Citizens are pretty excited about the idea of the potential deal.

Indeed, Laporte is a player that ticks all of the boxes for Man City, and at least according to our landlord, he could be the final necessary addition that Pep Guardiola requires as he looks to build the perfect team.

After all, there is a clear need for further defensive depth at the Etihad. The modern game is transitioning to a formation requiring three central defenders, and that’s problematic for a team that simply hasn’t got the strength in depth to utilise that formation. Vincent Kompany is often injured, John Stones has had his fair share of injury problems this season, and Eliaquim Mangala simply isn’t good enough. When you consider that Kompany is also 31-years-old and the fact that his career is winding down, and those fitness issues are only going to worsen.

For Laporte, then, there is a clear gap for him to squeeze into at the Etihad.

At 23-years-old, the Frenchman is everything that Guardiola needs. He has youth on his side, but having been a regular in La Liga over the last few years, he has so much experience too. He’s also at an age that would allow significant progression, and there would be no better place to develop to his maximum ability than at Man City under Guardiola. A fantastic passer of the ball, he fits into Guardiola’s philosophy fantastically, and alongside someone like John Stones, Man City would be able to transition from defence to attack with ease.

He’s the perfect player for Guardiola, and he’d be right at home within the Man City defence.
