Jose Mourinho isn’t best known for developing young players, but he’s going to have to change at Man Utd. He’s got enough on his plate at present, given the mixed form that his team have endured this season, but there is a rich history of youth development at Old Trafford – and he needs to make sure that he continues that tradition.
In Scott McTominay, he’s certainly indicated that he’s willing to do just that, but the midfielder is just the start when it comes to assessing the quality young players at Old Trafford.
There are plenty of other players in the ranks at Old Trafford that are good enough to make it at the club, and young Angel Gomes is one that certainly needs to be involved over the coming years.
A midfielder by trade, he’s best utilised as an attacking winger or central playmaker, with the Englishman offering tremendous pace, energy and skill on the ball. He’s able to dribble and drive at defenders and move past them with ease, much like Alexis Sanchez when the Chilean was in his pomp.
Gomes would fill a void in the Man Utd first team, given his role on the field. Able to play across the attack, his technical skill and quality on the ball both allow him to become a lynchpin through the midfield, and he has become the player in which much of the play goes through during his time in the Man Utd academy.
His frame is slight, and he needs to grow out and continue to develop, but in terms of raw natural ability, Gomes is arguably the shining light of the Man Utd academy.
He’s already made his debut for the Man Utd first team, and he’s continuing to make an impact in the academy – and so a regular first-team berth can’t be far away. With the likes of Juan Mata and Alexis Sanchez no longer in their youth, Gomes could be a viable long-term replacement.
