The Football Transfer Tavern was full of optimism for Paul Pogba when he returned to Manchester United, however so far, things have not gone as well for him as he would have hoped.
In all honesty, his partnership with Marouane Fellaini doesn’t seem to be working and the main reason is that both players are used to having the license to get forward.
There have been a lot of times, especially in the recent match against Watford, where both men went up the field, leaving a big space between the midfield and defence which was easily exploited by the opposition.
Pogba can be playing with the best attacking players in the world, but if this carries on he and his team are going to get found regularly.
However, nobody can expect him to simply sit back all game, break up play and lay it off to other players.
Therefore the way to get the best out of him is to put somebody next to him who is willing to and is used to fulfilling that role.
Michael Carrick hasn’t played yet for Man United under Mourinho, but could be the man that he needs.
Morgan Schneiderlin would be able to cover more ground to help out the side, but Carrick’s experience and positioning mean that he wouldn’t have to cover as much ground to be in a useful position.
As well as that, the Englishman’s distribution is better than that of Schneiderlin and so would help the side going forward.
Managing United will not suddenly become solely about managing Pogba, but as he is in such a central and important position, it is vital that Mourinho is able to pair the Frenchman with someone who can compliment his style.
Michael Carrick is the perfect partner for him.
Reliable, composed and technically strong, he may not be the most exciting player in the league, but he could help Pogba become just that.
