Southampton will go into next season expecting to once again improve on their league finish, after finally having a summer where they have yet to lose any of their top talent – despite Virgil Van Dijk still looking likely to move.
Saints’ new manager Mauricio Pellegrino will be hoping to add some star names to his squad in the coming weeks , and the new man in charge will no doubt have a good idea in his head of who he wants to bring in.
Our landlord here in the Tavern has been speaking to Saints fans this week about the transfer window, and there is a slight concern among them that they are in danger of being left behind in terms of quality additions.
However, there is still plenty of time, and one player our landlord thinks could be an excellent signing is Wolfsburg midfielder Max Arnold.
The 23-year-old has been a mainstay of the German under-21 squad for quite some time now, but with the next logical step making the move up to the full national team, he could well see the Premier League as the place to achieve that.
A classy midfielder, Arnold is a quality player in the centre of the field, and has a real presence about him when he is on form. A move to the Premier League might well appeal to Arnold, who has made well in excess of 100 appearances for his current club in the Bundesliga.
He looks to have all the attributes to fit in in the English top flight, and he is certainly someone who could add something to Southampton. He might be relatively unheard of on these shores to some, but there is little doubt he can make the switch and be a success in England.
