Tottenham’s performance against Real Madrid on Tuesday evening had the eyes of the entire Transfer Tavern firmly fixated. It was a game that was generating a lot of excitement amongst supporters, with nobody sure quite how it was going to go down. With Real Madrid one of the favourites for the Champions League title this season, some fans were convinced that they would trounce the Lilywhites, whilst most Tottenham fans were remaining optimistic.
In reality, the game was a very tight and cagey affair, with Tottenham doing well to hold Madrid to a 1-1 draw in Spain. Pochettino set up his side well, and whilst his team selection did draw a few confused eyes in the pub, it certainly worked out. One player that was a particular target of fan anger before the game was Fernando Llorente. The Spaniard has been utilised sparingly so far this season, but Pochettino called upon him in their biggest game of the season so far – and he did not disappoint.
The striker was arguably one of Tottenham’s best players, performing fantastically as he held up the ball and helped transition it from midfield to attack.
His inclusion has raised a few questions in the Transfer Tavern, and our landlord thinks that his display warrants another first-team start this weekend. Indeed, he thinks that the Spaniard simply must start against Liverpool – with his physicality and goalscoring threat likely to prove problematic for Jurgen Klopp’s men.
