Jurgen Klopp’s side returned to competitive action yesterday when they hosted West Ham in the Premier League. It turned out to be an absolute whitewash and the Reds were lucky enough to see a comfortable 4-0 thrashing with goals from Sadio Mane, Mo Salah and Daniel Sturridge. After the game, though, a stat appeared about the impact that Virgil van Dijk has had on the Kopites backline.

After signing for the club in January this year, it seems ludicrous to think that the impact of the big defender is already being felt. To not concede a domestic goal from February onwards is an amazing achievement, especially considering Liverpool have had a soft touch at the back in recent years. Klopp looks to have addressed these problems, though, and with big Virgil at the back, Liverpool are in a position to compete for titles.
Next up for van Dijk and co is a trip to Selhurst Park next Monday in the first edition of Monday Night Football. After smashing the Hammers off the park, the fans will be excited for their first away trip of the season and will have their sights set on another three points at Crystal Palace’s expense. With van Dijk at the back, the fans don’t have to worry about being leaky on the road and they can relax in the knowledge that their frontline will get goals whilst the new, reinforced backline will keep things out up the other end.

As you can see, the fans are loving what van Dijk has brought to the team and they’ll be hoping he can be crowned a Premier League winner come May.
