This summer saw West Ham United stick with manager Slaven Bilic amid mounting pressure and also back their manager in the transfer market to the tune over around £50m, as the Croat delved into the market to strengthen his squad.
One area Bilic particularly strengthened was along his forward line, with top additions such as Javier Hernandez and Marko Arnautovic joining the Hammers in big money deals.
However, our landlord thinks they could have wasted a bit of their money, especially on Stoke City man Arnautovic.
The big forward has had a couple of good seasons in the Premier League, but so far for the Hammers has looked a shadow of that player. His discipline has already come into question, and there are also question marks about where he fits in the system.
A returning Andy Carroll will nearly always play, as Bilic prefers to use the big striker when he can. Last season’s star man Manuel Lanzini is still to return, while Hernandez is also vying for a starting spot and will not be content on the bench in England again.
Add to this the talent of Michail Antonio down the right and Andre Ayew coming into a bit of a form, and Arnautovic suddenly finds himself fighting for a place in the team.
If he doesn’t rediscover his form quick, there’s every chance he could end up dropping out the team all together, giving West Ham’s owners a headache at what they will see as a big waste of £20m in the transfer market.
