Nobody in the Man Utd squad divides opinion in the Transfer Tavern more than Marouane Fellaini. The Belgian’s style of play has its lovers, but it also has its haters, and unfortunately for him, that’s led to a fair bit of frustration amongst fans.
He is at the centre of a lot of conversations at the moment, given that his contract at Old Trafford is currently on course to end at the end of the season. Until confirmation is offered to the contrary, then, it’s safe to assume that he’s set for the exit door.
Today, then, when Man Utd take on Brighton – perhaps Mourinho should opt to start him.
After all, he’s certainly got a point to prove. If he wants a new deal, another good performance could put him firmly in the good books of the Man Utd brass, and if he’s looking to leave, nothing will put him in the shop window quite like a strong performance in the Premier League.
Let’s not forget, either, that he was Man Utd’s matchwinner against Arsenal last week. He popped up with a powerful header in the closing stages to ensure that the three points remained in Manchester, and so he can certainly do a job against lowly Brighton.
At this point, Man Utd have little to fight for in the Premier League. Mourinho needs to give a few of his fringe players a chance, and if Fellaini can end the season well, perhaps a few of those Man Utd fans who aren’t particularly fond of Fellaini will change their mind.
He’s tall, he’s powerful, and he’s a real handful, and Man Utd don’t have anyone else like that. Surely he should start against the Seagulls, and maybe he’ll prove a point to everyone in the process by putting in a good performance.
