‘Time to rot in the reserves’ – Defender’s recent comments anger Southampton fans

Southampton fans in the Transfer Tavern were again left disappointed by their side after seeing the Saints lose at Stoke City on Saturday.

Mauricio Pellegrino’s men went into their clash at the bet365 Stadium on Saturday having won just one of their previous four Premier League matches, and goals from Mame Biram Diouf and Peter Crouch extended that run to five.

Maya Yoshida did level up proceedings in the Potteries but the Saints weren’t able to nick a point from the contest, leaving the South Coast outfit 12th in the table having won just two of their opening seven league games.

And there was further frustration for several of our resident Southampton fans on Tuesday, as comments arose from defender Virgil van Dijk about seeking to resurrect his move to Liverpool in January.

The 26-year-old was heavily linked with the Merseyside giants over the summer but no deal materialised before the August 31 deadline, leaving the Netherlands international at St Mary’s and in a fight to reclaim his first team place.

And his recent comments suggest that he is still looking to make a move in January, which has provoked quite a response from Southampton fans on Twitter.

And it’s fair to say that they aren’t overly happy with the defender’s comments…
