One man that was expected to leave Tottenham Hotspur this summer has revealed that he never had the intention of departing.
The Belgium international had been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United over the course of the transfer window after the former Southampton defender refused to extend his contract with the north London club.
However, Alderweireld has since come out and stated that it claims he had wanted to leave Spurs were untrue and he is happy to be back in Mauricio Pochettino’s first-team plans.
“Everyone was saying everywhere that I absolutely wanted to leave Tottenham,” he told the Daily Mirror.
“That’s not true. This summer, I quickly understood Tottenham wanted to keep me.
“So, I had to battle to get my place back in the team. To be in the first team again is a victory for me.”
Alderweireld was expected to depart from Tottenham this summer after appearing to fall out with Pochettino, however, it looks as though those concerns have been put to bed.
After having appeared just 14 times last season, with injuries also playing a role in his limited showings, the defender has started the last three matches and looks to be in the Argentine’s plans moving forward.
However, Spurs will still have some concerns as the player’s contract is set to expire in 2019 – with a further one-year extension clause that Tottenham will likely take up – and a £25million release clause that will come into effect next summer.
