Leeds United: Todd Cantwell move unlikely before transfer deadline

Leeds United: Todd Cantwell move unlikely before transfer deadline - Leeds United

Leeds United are not expected to make a move for Norwich City’s Todd Cantwell before the 5pm transfer deadline this evening.

Whites manager Marcelo Bielsa has been one of the busiest in the Premier League in terms of transfers over the summer, spending near the £100m mark on the likes of Rodrigo Moreno, Diego Llorente and European deadline day signing Raphinha.

With the domestic window currently still open but set to close this evening, the Argentine’s desire to bring in Cantwell from Norwich continues to be speculated in the press.

The young midfielder suffered relegation at Carrow Road last term but made an impression in the Premier League, netting six goals and gaining two assists in his 37 top-flight appearances.

Will Leeds United sign Todd Cantwell before 5pm?

Despite claims from Italian journalist Nicolo Schira earlier this month that the youngster had agreed personal terms with Leeds, no agreement or movement over a transfer fee has taken place.

Sky Sports reported earlier this week that Norwich had not received an offer from Leeds for Cantwell and Football Insider have now claimed that a deal will not happen before the closure of the current window.

A recruitment source close to Football Insider has apparently hinted that Norwich now feel assured that the 22-year-old midfielder, whom they reportedly value at £20m, will remain at Carrow Road.

A potential January move for Todd Cantwell

With 35-year-old Spanish playmaker Pablo Hernandez drawing closer to the end of his career, Leeds manager Bielsa seemingly wants to find a replacement and the former Athletic Bilbao coach may see the failure to sign Cantwell this month as a setback.

Hernandez has 36 goals and 39 assists to his name during his Leeds spell, and Cantwell’s early career statistics suggest that he could be the perfect long-term replacement for the Spanish veteran.

The midfielder’s former youth coach Gary Cockaday once said the midfielder has “god-given” talent, further adding to his reputation, and Bielsa may be tempted to try again for the Norwich maestro in January’s transfer window.
