Everton

Toffees Woo Sweet Toothed Signings

Now you can imagine my surprise when, earlier today, I stumbled upon an article on a largely respected fan site suggesting Everton could have ‘£70million in the piggy bank’ for transfers.

Oh aye, I snorted, where on earth has this little loot been hiding, where’s this mysterious money suddenly ‘popped up’ from and… oh god! What exotic stars can we expect? Let’s throw it all at Ronaldo, yeah? No, actually, wait, share it out, get three Galacticos, Oh, its going to be great, Everton are gonna take over the earth, so f**k you, all you doubters, sceptics and greedy thieves targeting all the talent, its Everton’s turn.

Yup, let myself go for a second there, took my eye off the ball. Well, unfortunately, on further reading I realised the article had simply totted-up the year’s income and somehow suggested this should/would all be available; blissfully ignoring that this was just turnover – actually estimated at less than the previous year – and didn’t take into account outgoings, wages, debts, interest on debts, other expenses and the fact that net spending at Everton is, as usual, likely to be very low.

Ah, if only annoying little things like the loss section of company accounts could be ignored, if only Everton did have this £70million transfer kitty…imagine, imagine, immmmagine (and sleep)… Giorgio Chiellini, Mesut Ozil and Edin Dzeko, under Moyes, with that strapping squad nucleus already in place, yes please….

But, back to life, back to reality (or however that song goes) and it’s off to the bargain basket again; not that this always a bad thing – Arteta, Pienaar, Cahill etcetera – hence the word ‘bargain’.

Indeed, another subtle and quietly sealed deal has been delivered. Hot on the heels of Beckford’s free transfer, Everton have now signed a young Portuguese striker by the name of Joao Silva. At only 20-years-old he looks like a promising player. Signed from Portuguese second division side Desportivo Das Aves for an undisclosed fee (thought to be around £600,000), Silva was the league’s second top goal scorer last year – his first season since graduating to the professional ranks – with 14 goals in 32 appearances. He’s highly rated in Portugal and at 6ft 2in is a fairly imposing presence.

So, the £70million spending spree begins…
