Chelsea v Spartak Moscow, GpF, 19:45
Beating the Russians in their own back yard last time out you would back Chelski to do it again. Despite a rather off colour albeit winning performance against Blackburn on the weekend you would still expect the boys from the bridge to step it up on Wednesday. Spartak are no mugs though, they have managed to beat Maseille in France and thumped Zilina 3-0 at home.
Chelsea look to win the group with ease as it stands, though a draw would see the Russians in decent stead to take Marseille to Moscow to secure second place. I think it will be a rather cagey affair but I can’t see Chelsea sitting back too much on a European night at Stamford Bridge.
My Prediction: 1-0
Shakhtar Donetsk v Arsenal, GpH, 19:45
Shakhtar are only just becoming a household name in the UK after a few reasonably successful year in Europe. I just remember them being great for cheap world class players on Championship Manager. Despite a 5-1 drubbing at the Emerates two weeks ago, I still wouldn’t call them an easy challenge. Winners of the then Uefa Cup a couple of seasons ago, the lads from Ukraine will look for some redemption tonight.
A win at home would put them in touching distance of qualification at least three points clear of Braga and a draw would put progression in their own hands.
The atmosphere in Donetsk will be electric tonight but I feel if Arsenal can play with the freedom they have done in the last three ties they should have no problem at all. There will be goals in this one.
My Prediction: 1-3
