Newcastle United are expected to complete the loan signing of Manchester United’s Federico Macheda, following comments made by the player’s agent.
The agent told calciomercato.com: “Macheda doesn’t return to Italy, Manchester United will send him on loan in the Premier League.
“At this time Newcastle has the edge over Queens Park Rangers.”
Newcastle are still looking for a striker to replace Andy Carroll. Though recent signing Demba Ba certainly offers promise after his impressive end of season for West Ham, many fans believe at least one more striker is essential.
Macheda clearly has talent but with last season’s joint-top Premier League goalscorer Dimitar Berbatov as low down as fourth in Alex Ferguson’s list of striking options, it is unlikely Macheda will see much if any first-team football this season.
After sending the youngster on loan to Sampdoria in January, Ferguson is said to be keen to keep Macheda in England, as his spell in Italy was perceived to have almost no positive effects on his development.
A host of Premier League clubs have been interested in signing the Italian u-21 striker, with Everton and QPR emerging as strong favourites. However, it seems Alan Pardew has stolen a march on his rivals and secured Macheda’s arrival at St. James’ Park.
After selling four of the side’s best players, Newcastle fans are now hoping owner Mike Ashley begins to spend the money which will allow them to push on.
