After the unprecedented success of winning the Champions League title in such dramatic fashion last season the current campaign always had the feeling of proving an anti-climax.
With Champions League football secured for next year and the Europa League Final in Amsterdam to come on Wednesday, interim boss Rafael Benitez has turned a season destined for failure into one that could finish with the club collecting a trophy they have never seized before.
All the reports suggest that Jose Mourinho will be making the long-awaited return to Stamford Bridge as a replacement for former Liverpool boss Benitez and that could lead to a bright future for the Blues in a much-changed Premier League.
