Top ten Newcastle United transfer misfits

Alan Smith - £7millionNewcastle United left it late, but in the end proved to be the biggest spenders in the January transfer window.

After losing top scorer Demba Ba to Chelsea, Alan Pardew knew he had to react, and did so by spending over £20 million on new talent.

The Magpies manager has come in for some criticism for the amount of French players he has signed, but the early signs have been promising, particularly from midfielder Moussa Sissoko, who stole the show on his home debut against Chelsea netting twice in Newcastle’s 3-2 win.

The clubs transfer policy has changed over recent seasons, and it has to be said the club have unearthed some gems over the past couple of seasons. The likes of Papiss Cisse (mainly last season), Yohan Cabaye and Cheick Tiote have all proved superb signings, and all have come at reasonable prices.

However this hasn’t always been the case for the Magpies, who like all clubs – have done some rotten business down the years.
