Arsene Wenger has finally succumbed to mounting pressure and decided to go out and buy replacements for departing players by splashing out to sign Werder Bremen and Germany centre-back Per Mertesacker. Mertesacker is available for around £10m.
Arsenal’s defence look at best best inexperienced, at worst clueless against Manchester United. The ease with which United were able to carve out opportunities and completely dictate the game was shocking to everyone including Arsenal Wenger.
With no time to waste as the transfer window’s frantic ending begins, Wenger has moved to secure his defence with power and experience. After last night completing the very respectable signing of Andre Dos Sasntos from Fenerbahce for £6.2m, Wenger will spend a similar amount on Mertesacker who has picked as the natural partner of Belgian Thomas Vermaelen.
Mertesacker had been send out mixed signals to Arsenal, declaring his desire to move to the Premiership before ruling out a move to the Emirates. For once, maybe Arsene Wenger’s characteristic hesitance was justified.
Now it seems he has finally got his man and Mertesacker who has been given permission to leave Germany’s international set-up to fly to London to complete the move.
The move come amidst a public relations disaster during which Arsenal attempted to sign centre-back Gary Cahill from Arsenal.
With the clock ticking, Wenger will look to continue his spending to replace key midfielder Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas.
