The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern have been full of praise for their side’s transfer strategy over the last few years. Daniel Levy has invested well and he has invested frugally, particularly since the arrival of Mauricio Pochettino, and that deserves a lot of credit.
Indeed, many of Tottenham’s first team stars have been signed for very little – only to become impressive Premier League-level players within a matter of months.
It’s hard to quantify who Tottenham’s best signing really has been over the last few years, but our landlord thinks that Davinson Sanchez – who is rated at £31.5m by Transfer Markt – is a very good candidate.
Signed from Ajax last summer, the Columbian was brought in to fill a very important role. For all of Tottenham’s defensive qualities, they lacked a ball-playing centre-half that could help bring play forward – and Sanchez has taken to the role like a fish to water.
An incredible passer, rarely does he lose the ball, whilst his ability as a defender is not to be doubted. Of course, like any player, he has made mistakes, but it’s tough to suggest that the Columbian doesn’t look at home alongside world-class defenders like Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld.
Perhaps the most interesting thing about him is his age – he is still just 21-years-old. Sure, he might have been brought in for a lot of money, but he’s still developing, and the prospect of him getting any better should be nightmarish to opposition attackers.
Given that many of his partners at the back are moving closer to, or are already beyond, 30-years-old, Sanchez truly is the future of the defence, and if he’s been as good as he has within the course of a few months – just think how good he could be in a few years.
