Reports in Spain are gathering momentum that Harry Redknapp has twenty five million pounds to spend on a striker in January and Madrid’s Karim Benzema is his top choice.
Benzema is being looked at by Manchester City and Juventus apparently and has also been linked with a move to Manchester United numerous times. The Frenchman is out of favour at Real and finds himself behind Gonzalo Higuain, Cristiano Ronaldo and Mesut Ozil, with Kaka yet to return from injury.
Reports also claim that Tottenham tried, and failed, to sign Diego Forlan and Luis Fabiano over the summer.
The French striker, twenty two, has struggled to replicate his Lyon form since moving to Madrid. For Lyon he scored forty three league goals in a hundred and twelve games, he’s also better than one in three for France.
Despite not being able to hold down a regular place under Jose Mourinho, there’s no doubt he’s an explosive talent when he’s on form.
Harry Redknapp seems to be learning about who to sign once you’re in the Champions League. He’s cottoned on to the highly regarded ‘sign Madrid’s rejects’ strategy. It worked for Inter Milan with Wesley Sneijder, it worked for Bayern Munich with Arjen Robben and it’s so far worked for Tottenham with Rafael van der Vaart. Benzema could be next to leave Madrid and set the world alight.
There’s no doubt he’d be an excellent coup for Tottenham, but would he be interested if City, United or Juventus were in for him? I’d guess probably not. Then again, City doesn’t need him, United can’t afford him and Juventus can’t offer Champions League football like Spurs can.
