Tottenham Hotspur’s Toby Alderweireld has become a key target for AS Roma, according to a report by Calciomercato.
The report suggests there are two parts to what the Italian outfit will look to do to try and get a deal across the line, as they are thought to be serious in bringing him to the Italian capital.
Firstly, it is claimed the sporting director, Gianluca Petrachi, will meet with the Belgium international’s agent and present him with an important contractual offer.
Then, it is stated that Franco Baldini is prepared to fly to London and meet with his previous employers to try and negotiate a deal with Tottenham regarding the sale of Alderweireld.
Alderweireld is thought to have a release clause of just £25million in his current contract (Express) so it would not be too difficult to imagine clubs looking to take advantage of that. When you consider the fact Tyrone Mings recently joined Aston Villa in a deal reportedly worth up to £26.5m after impressing in the Championship, the sort of fee it would require to sign Alderweireld does look fairly reasonable.
The 30-year-old has been a key player for Tottenham recently, with his stats from last season just going to highlight how important he has been for Mauricio Pochettino’s side over the last 12 months.
According to WhoScored, the Belgium international managed to record an average of 1.1 tackles and 0.7 interceptions in his 34 Premier League appearances, whilst also helping the club reach the Champions League final.
Although he made fewer tackles than his central defensive colleagues (WhoScored), the fact that he was a mainstay in the Argentine’s side showed his importance to the club, especially considering he fell out of favour with the manager for much of the 2017/18 campaign (Sky Sports).
Although no transfer fee had been mentioned by Calciomercato, it will be interesting to see whether Roma will look to meet it or try and negotiate a smaller fee.
