Atletico Madrid are set to increase their efforts to land Tottenham Hotspur’s Kieran Trippier this summer, according to a report by The Sun.
It is claimed the La Liga giants have the England international as one of two options to solve their right-back position next season – Paris Saint-Germain’s Thomas Meunier is thought to be the other.
Diego Simeone is believed to see Trippier as a £25million replacement for Juanfran; however, Juventus are also thought to be interested in acquiring the 28-year-old this summer.
Mauricio Pochettino is believed to be willing to sell the Tottenham man to try and raise funds for new additions (Daily Mail), whilst the defender did not have the best of years in a Spurs shirt.
Trippier admitted he had a poor campaign last season when he was left out of the England squad for the Nations League finals.
He received plenty of criticism throughout the season with a number of Tottenham supporters venting their frustrations with him via Twitter (Thisisfutbol), whilst Graeme Souness held back no punches when discussing his defensive abilities (or lack of).
Speaking on Sky Sports following their defeat to Liverpool at Anfield (via The Sun), the pundit slammed Trippier for allowing Andy Robertson to have so much space to put in the cross for Roberto Firmino’s goal by saying: “Because he is not a very good defender”.
And, his attacking stats left a little to be desired as well. According to Transfermarkt, he managed just five assists in 38 appearances across all competitions last season, whereas he recorded nine in 35 matches the year before.
