Tottenham closing in on deal for 29-year-old defensive stalwart

The Tottenham fans in the Football Transfer Tavern are delighted about this…

Whilst much of the attention at Tottenham over the last few weeks has surrounded Harry Kane’s lack of a new deal – the Lilywhites in the Football Transfer Tavern may finally be about to receive some good news.

According to the Mirror, whilst a new deal for Kane remains some way off – Tottenham are closing in on securing a new deal for long-standing defensive stalwart Jan Vertonghen – who has been a constant over the last few years under Mauricio Pochettino.

The Mirror are reporting that the Belgian defender is set to prolong his career with the Lilywhites whilst also improving his earnings – in a deal that will suit all parties.

Jan Vertonghen joined Tottenham in 2012 – and has since transformed into one of Europe’s finest central defenders.  He has picked up 121 league appearances in that time, and his influence in the heart of the Tottenham defence is unparalleled.

The last year or so have been particularly prolific for the experienced Belgian, having formed quite the partnership with Toby Alderweireld. Alongside his Belgian compatriot, Vertonghen has become part of one of the Premier League’s best defences – and their defensive dominance was crucial en route to a title challenge for Spurs last season.

Often touted by the Tottenham fans in the Football Transfer Tavern as the strongest part of the Spurs first team, Vertonghen is a crucial part of an incredible defensive line – and his seemingly impending new deal looks set to verify that.
