There seems to be quite a mixed set of emotions in the Football Transfer Tavern today with jubilation for our Tottenham Hotspur supporters and not so much jubilation mixed with feelings of anger towards Atletico Madrid for Southampton fans.
As several sources such as Sky Sports have confirmed, Spurs have today completed the signing of the Belgian defender Toby Alderweireld, who of course enjoyed a successful loan season at St Mary’s last season.
Initially, it looked as if Alderweireld was set to sign a permanent deal with Southampton, only for Atletico to change their mind about letting him go.
It would certainly appear that Southampton have been pretty unlucky with how they have been treated and as a result have lost a key member from last year to Mauricio Pochettino.
However, Southampton should hopefully be able to receive some form of compensation from Atletico who appear to have not honoured the deal fairly at all.
For Tottenham however, a strong acquisition certainly has been made, as Alderweireld will now partner his former Ajax and current Belgium team-mate Jan Vertonghen, at the heart of their defence.
For Southampton, new defensive acquisitions will have to be made elsewhere and some punters are questinoning whether a return for Dejan Lovern could be on the cards perhaps.
