Tottenham edging closer to another big summer deal as Pochettino looks to fill squad gap

The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern need some cheering up at the moment…

Despite impressing against Chelsea, the Lilywhites stumbled to a 2-1 loss against the Blues, with the brilliant Marcos Alonso dominating down the left-hand side.

In a game that has quickly become one of London’s most hotly contested rivalries, it’s a clash that Tottenham certainly didn’t want to lose, and so the fans are feeling pretty depleted at present.

Fortunately, it appears as though they’ll have something to celebrate soon, with French publication L’Equipe reporting that they are edging closer to another summer deal. According to L’Equipe, Tottenham are said to be close to agreeing a fee with PSG for Serge Aurier, with the French outfit seemingly keen to sell the defender.

PSG have, of course, spent big this summer – most notably with the capture of Neymar – and so in an effort to balance the books, Aurier could be deemed surplus to requirements.

What is their loss would certainly be Tottenham’s gain, though, with Aurier undoubtedly one of Europe’s most talented full-backs. Very strong going forward and increasingly dependable at the back, the Frenchman has been a regular during his stint with PSG.

He would follow Davinson Sanchez to Tottenham, who has agreed to join the club pending a medical and a work permit.

Landlord’s Verdict

Tottenham still have yet to plug the gap left behind by Kyle Walker, and so a move for Aurier makes sense.

The defender has had his share of personal problems, but Mauricio Pochettino is the perfect player to get him straight and working to his potential.

A fee around £25 million, as has been mooted, is a bargain in the modern market, and so Tottenham have done well to negotiate this one. Now they just need to get it over the line.
