Tottenham ‘enquire’ about availability of PL defender, £16.2m-rated man could leave in January – report

The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern have been impressed by Mauricio Pochettino’s signings over the last few years. The Argentine has bought fantastically since moving to North London, having signed players that have developed into world-class members of the Spurs first team. From Dele Alli to Toby Alderweireld, he has got very little wrong on that front.

It seems as though the manager could look to work his magic again in January, too, with the Guardian reporting that Spurs have ‘enquired’ about the availability of Man Utd defender Luke Shaw. Shaw has fallen out of favour at Man Utd and could be allowed to leave in January regardless of any business that the Red Devils conduct throughout the month.

Shaw’s career has gone off the rails since moving to Old Trafford, despite being one of Europe’s highest-rated defenders a few years ago. He was a star for Southampton, and he deserved his move to Man Utd, but a mix of a lack of form, a lack of fitness and a number of managerial changes have really left their mark on the Englishman.

That clearly isn’t bothering Pochettino, though. He’s been very consistent when it comes to improving the form of players, and he could have a similar effect on Shaw. Let’s not forget, he’s still a quality player, but he just needs a platform to spread his wings – whilst he also needs a solid run of fitness.

Spurs could provide the perfect home for him, and news of this interest is delighting our resident Lilywhites.

Landlord’s Verdict

As the Guardian report, a move is far from a certainty, and it appears at this point that Tottenham’s interest is just that – they are curious about his availability and price point.

Man Utd won’t want to sell him cheaply, but you’d think his lack of involvement at Old Trafford could offer some scope for the notorious Daniel Levy to work his magic. He’s rated at £16.2 million by Transfer Markt, but Man Utd would likely demand more than that.

A move could be another stroke of genius from Spurs, if it works out.
