Clearly, Spurs need to deepen their squad if they’re to challenge on all four fronts next season, so bringing in Nicolo Zaniolo to challenge Christian Eriksen would be perfect.
The Mirror have reported that Spurs are interested in bringing the Roma attacking midfielder to London and it’s no surprise considering the impression he’s made since bursting onto the scene this season.
He signed from Inter Milan for £4.05m in the summer and since then he’s made 27 appearances, making two assists and scoring four goals. Those may not be stand-out numbers, but at the age of just 19, he’s showing he can be one of Europe’s best.
This goal against Sassuolo last season certainly hinted at something special…
Right now, Christian Eriksen seems immovable at Spurs, but he does need competition to make sure his standard is kept high. Surely even he’d be fearful if this lad came in and started to influence play like he has done in Italy. Indeed, the Mauricio Pochettino project has told us that youth can be better than experience at times.
He’s been likened to Steven Gerrard by his former coach Stefano Vecchi and if he can get anywhere near the level of the Liverpool legend, then Eriksen’s spot in the starting line-up would be anything but secure. While he’s quite obviously got a long way to go when it comes to matching the Liverpool legend, that kind of box-to-box energy would energise a side who have so often looked flat this season.
He’s rated at £36m on Transfermarkt, has a contract until 2023 and has age on his side, so he won’t come cheap. Now’s the time for Daniel Levy to invest in the future and bring in some competition for places to make sure the likes of Eriksen don’t rest on their laurels.
Just imagine him at the new stadium, ensuring this Spurs team don’t end their cycle after the Champions League final, only continue it into a brighter dawn at their stunning home.
