Here in the Football Transfer Tavern eyebrows have been raised by the latest reports from talkSPORT that Real Madrid may well be set to rival Tottenham for their long-term transfer target Ilkay Gundogan.
The German is seen as a potential long-term successor to Xabi Alonso who is of course a mainstay in the Real Madrid side looking to win trophies on two fronts this season. Tottenham for their part have been tracking the 22-year-old for some time now and would love to land him in the summer.
Having been capped five times for the senior German national team so far in his career, the player would be available for around £21.5 million and given Borussia Dortmund only paid £4.8 million for him, if he moved on it would prove quite a profit.
Andre Villas-Boas’ side are not out of the race for the midfielder however as in an ideal world Real would have Xabi Alonso pen a new deal that would take him past the summer of 2014. The Spanish side are also looking at former youth team player Javi Garcia and Yaya Toure should the latter make good on his promise and leave the Etihad Stadium.
