Tottenham fall behind in race for potentially huge January deal

Tottenham supporters have been pretty despondent in the Transfer Tavern in recent times after seeing their side suffer a fifth Premier League defeat at the weekend, thus seeing the North London outfit slip from fourth to seventh in the table.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men were comfortably beaten 4-1 by table-toppers Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium to suffer a fourth loss in their last nine league games, thus falling a staggering 21 points adrift of Pep Guardiola’s side, a team Spurs finished eight points clear of last term. And that loss also saw the North Londoners fall out of the Premier League’s top four, and it doesn’t get much easier for Pochettino’s team either as they face a tricky trip to sixth place Burnley on Saturday, who currently sit a point above Spurs in the table.

Subsequently, there have been many deflated Tottenham fans in the Tavern in recent times, and their mood is unlikely to improve anytime soon if a recent report from Ladbrokes is anything to go by, which suggests that Spurs have fallen behind in the race for Everton’s Ross Barkley.

The 23-year-old’s future at Goodison Park has been subject of speculation for a while now given that he has yet to agree an extension to his current deal at the club, which is due to end at the conclusion of the campaign.

The England international almost made the move to Premier League champions Chelsea in August but a deal failed to materialise, yet recent reports suggest that it is Antonio Conte’s men who are favourites to land the midfielder, with the Blues 6/5 to seal a deal ahead of Spurs at 6/4.

And although there isn’t much between those prices, it looks like Pochettino’s side will have a battle on their hands trying to lure Barkley to Wembley over a move to Stamford Bridge next month.

Landlord’s verdict: Ross Barkley’s Everton future has been in the news for a while now, with former Toffees chief Ronald Koeman pretty forthright in his views regarding the 23-year-old’s situation.

However, just a few weeks before January, his contract remains unsorted and as such the Merseysiders may look to cash in on the midfielder next month, with reported interest from Chelsea and Tottenham unlikely to go away given how talented Barkley is, and how much potential he appears to have.

Yet it is the Blues (6/5) who reportedly lead the chase for the England star ahead of Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham (6/4), which leaves the North London outfit with much to do in a bid to bring Barkley to Wembley next month.
