According to the Daily Mirror, Barcelona are interested in signing Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld in the January transfer window with the Belgian yet to sign a new contract at his club.
Alderweireld’s current contract is up next summer — though Tottenham have the option to trigger a one-year extension, which in return will activate a £25m release clause — and Barcelona look prepared to take full advantage of the uncertainty surrounding the 29-year-old’s future.
With Alderweireld’s future looking like it is away from north London, Tottenham may act on their long-standing interest in Ajax’s Matthijs de Ligt (via Evening Standard), who is also rumoured to be on Barcelona’s shortlist.
And the thought of getting rid of Alderweireld is one that Transfer Tavern has discovered Tottenham supporters on Twitter are now open to, especially if it creates a path for de Light to arrive at White Hart Lane.
Considering de Light’s potential, that is hardly a surprise. However, losing £36m-rated (via Transfermarkt) Alderweireld is really not something to celebrate, especially when there is nothing to suggest de Light to Tottenham is nailed on.
Prior to his injury problems, Alderweireld was easily the best or at least most consistent central defender in the Premier League following his arrival at Tottenham back in the summer of 2016.
With him in the team, Mauricio Pochettino’s side look so much more solid, though they have certainly coped well enough in his absence thanks to the addition of Davinson Sanchez.
Nevertheless, regardless of how slim the chances are, Tottenham must do all they can to tie Alderweireld down to a new contract. The Belgium international is a brilliant defender and his potential exit is not one that supporters should be desperate to see.Like what the TT have on offer? Sign up for more notifications!
