Tottenham fans have been discussing their club’s selection problems ahead of their clash with Barcelona tonight, and some have raised a few eyebrows.
The Lilywhites have been dealt the bitter news that star men such as Christian Eriksen, Jan Vertonghen, Dele Alli and Mousa Dembélé will all be missing. Meanwhile, the good news is that captain Hugo Lloris is fit to return in goal for the clash against the Spanish giants at Wembley.
In response to the story, one of our regular punters delved into Twitter and reported that some Tottenham fans have taken objection to this, believing that stand in keeper Paulo Gazzaniga has done nothing wrong to warrant being dropped. After initially playing Michele Vorm in Lloris’ absence, some costly mistakes by the Dutchman as well as an injury forced Mauricio Pochettino to turn to the Argentinian shot stopper for the last three games.
Since then, Tottenham have won all three matches, including a heroic penalty shootout performance by Gazzaniga in the League Cup against Watford where he saved two penalties. He followed that performance up with a clean sheet the next match.
While the 26-year-old appears to be in good form, it is still foolish to think that he should start ahead of Lloris. Gazzaniga is yet to be tested against high quality opposition of the likes of Barcelona yet in his Tottenham career. Risking him against the likes of Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez would be a bizarre choice by Pochettino.
Furthermore, while their performances may be comparable, it is the leadership of Lloris that will prove to be so vital for The Lilywhites. In the French captain’s absence, Tottenham went on a three match losing streak, where they were winning in the closing stages in two of those games. The club lacked his leadership on the field, and that could prove to be vital at Wembley.
This is a massive boost for Tottenham, and the World Cup winning captain’s experience may be enough to get the victory.Like what the TT have on offer? Sign up for more notifications!
