Tottenham fans loyalty to Vincent Janssen is admirable but blatantly misplaced

Tottenham Hotspur’s second striker conundrum has been a problem which has troubled the club in recent seasons, as the likes of Fernando Llorente and Vincent Janssen have struggled for form with Harry Kane firmly ahead of them in the pecking order.

Plenty was expected of the latter when he arrived in north London for a fee of £20 million in the summer of 2016 on the back of a fantastic season at AZ Alkmar. However, Janssen has since joined a growing number of Eredivisie stars who have failed to adapt to the Premier League despite thriving in Holland.

Indeed, Janssen has failed to replicate the form he demonstrated in Holland in English football, and his career has been on a downward trajectory ever since his move to Spurs.

Following a season-long loan spell with Fenerbahce, Janssen returned to Tottenham this summer, but any hope of completing another transfer before the August deadline has been stifled by a foot injury which he recently had an operation on.

Our very own Ally Darlow delved into Twitter to assess the reaction of the supporters following the news that Janssen had successfully undergone surgery on his foot injury, and he surprisingly discovered that plenty of the Spurs faithful are hoping he will return to the first-team in the near future.

One supporter stated that Janssen ‘deserves a second chance’ whilst another bemoaned that fact the striker has never been given a ‘proper crack at it’ since joining the club.

Whilst the loyalty the supporters have shown towards Janssen is certainly admirable, it’s also misplaced. Simply put, the 24-year-old striker is not mobile enough for Pochettino’s fluid system, and he lacks the clinical instinct which is needed to thrive at this level: a record of just 4 goals from 16 appearances in the Turkish Super Lig last season suggests he is out of his depth in the Premier League.

If Spurs have genuine ambitions of challenging the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool for the Premier League title, they will need a player who is vastly superior to Janssen to support Kane with his duties at centre-forward.

It looks as if Janssen will not be able to complete a transfer this summer due to his injury problem, but as soon as the January window opens for business there’s no doubt that Pochettino should seek to offload him as a transfer would be in the best interests of all parties concerned.
